The following descriptions are included to acquaint you with each of the wild berry types and the special Alaskan-made items included in our gift boxes.
Blueberries A blueberry unlike any other. Our local, wild blueberries are unique in North America. A naturally occurring hybrid between the Early Blueberry and Blue Huckleberries, these early blue/huckleberries,(Latin, Vaccinium Ovalifolium), have a superior, intense wild blueberry flavor.
Salmonberries Our salmonberry jam, jelly and syrup capture all the unusual and wonderful taste of this rare, wild berry. Salmonberries are in the raspberry family and are only found in northern coastal areas. Their color ranges from yellow to dark red. Our signature jelly.
High Bush Cranberries One taste of this jelly will take you to the north woods in the fall. This pungent berry cooks into a marvelous jelly that will tantalize your taste buds with its blend of moist woodsy smells and sweetness. Not related to the bog or low bush cranberry, (lingonberry), the High Bush Cranberry is in the honeysuckle family.
Lingonberries This is a Scandinavian name from the wild, northern Low Bush Cranberry, We use the whole berry in our jam. The slightly tart taste of this berry is wonderful in a sweet jam.
Black Currants This jelly, along with our High and Low Bush Cranberry items has a more "earthy" taste. If you're not a fan of "sweet" jams or jellies, this one is for you.
Elderberries The Elderberry Bush is also known as the Alaskan Lilac and is part of the Honeysuckle family. It has a dark red berry which has a subtle taste and makes a very pleasant jelly. |
Watermelon Berries Also known as twisted stalk, this berry is from the lily family. When ripe, the berries are plump and red, tasting a little like watermelon. These berries make a light tasting jelly.
Rose Hips High in vitamin C, the Rose Hip makes a pleasing jelly with a distant citric taste. The color of the jelly and syrup is a pale yellow.
Kelp Marmalade Absolutely delicious! This marmalade, whose main ingredient is the very healthful Bull Kelp, lacks the "bite" of all citrus marmalades. We know of no-one-else in North America who makes this marmalade. Our recipe has been handed down within our tribe for several generations.
Fireweed Blossoms The blossoms from the fireweed produce a wonderful magenta jelly. Our jelly captures the delicate flavor of these beautiful blooms.
Fireweed Honey The delicate taste of this most northern honey will bring you back for more. Collected from hives set in dense fields of fireweed, this honey is as close to pure fireweed nectar as you can get. Light in color and wonderfully smooth, this honey is an Alaskan rarity.
Wild Herbal Teas These four teas, all from Kachemak Bay herbs and wild berries, are a delight to sip. The original blends with their unique northern names, are from locally hand picked and processed wild berries, wild herbs and homegrown herbs. A few exotic "southern" herbs are sometimes used. Four each of "Aurora Borealis Blend", "Yukon Yarrow", "Alaska Breakfast Blend", and "Seldovia Bay Blueberry Tea".
Alutiiq/Bidarka Ornament Handmade in Seldovia, by Barbara Carlough, this felt ornament is a true Alaskan keepsake. The Alutiiq paddler in a bidarka, (kayak), returning from a successful berry picking trip, depicts a traditional native way of traveling. |
